Liberty News - This is how satisfied the Swiss people are

The Swiss people are generally satisfied with their lives. But this is not the case in all respects to the same degree: they are less satisfied with politics and their own financial situation.

How satisfied are Swiss people with their lives? Moneyland.ch investigated this question in a representative survey. It asked 1500 people from German-speaking and French-speaking Switzerland about their satisfaction with various factors and institutions. The result: according to the survey, people in Switzerland are generally satisfied with their lives. When asked about their overall satisfaction with life, the survey participants gave an average of 7.3 out of a maximum of 10 points. This figure is unchanged from the last survey in 2023.

Older respondents are more satisfied

The over-50 generation is the most satisfied – this conclusion can be drawn by looking at the different age groups. While the 18- to 49-year-olds rate their overall life satisfaction with an average of 7.1 points, the age cohort aged 50 to 74 gives an average of 7.5 points.

According to gender and language region, the differences in general satisfaction are smaller. Women rate their general satisfaction on average 7.3 points, for men the average rating is 7.2 points. Respondents from German-speaking Switzerland (7.3 points) rate their general satisfaction slightly higher than those from French-speaking Switzerland (7.2 points).

Children and parents get the highest score

The Swiss are most satisfied with their families: Satisfaction with their own children is 7.9 points, followed by their parents with 7.5 points. Respondents from the west of Switzerland are particularly satisfied with their children and parents, and give an average of 8.2 points (children) and 7.7 points (parents). German-speaking Swiss rate their satisfaction with their children with 7.7 points and with their parents with 7.4 points.

While their own bank, the Internet subscription provider and colleagues received a slightly improved score, respondents were somewhat less satisfied with their home.

Politicians get away badly

At the other end of the scale is national politics: Swiss politicians get the lowest score with 5.5 points. The Federal Council is only marginally better rated with 5.6 points. Personal financial situation (5.7 points) and salary (5.9 points) are also far lower.

People from rural areas in particular are critical of national politics. Respondents from municipalities with less than 2000 inhabitants rate Swiss politicians on average with only 4.9 points, and the Federal Council with 5.0 points.

Satisfaction with personal financial situation and salary is rated higher with increasing assets. While respondents with assets of less than 20'000 francs rate their satisfaction with their financial situation with only 4.6 points, those with assets of at least 1 million francs are far more satisfied (7.6 points). Moreover, men (6.0 points) are more satisfied with their personal finances than women (5.5 points).
